Plan a product demonstration for social media

Demonstrating a cosmetic product on a hand

A product demonstration needs a specific question that the images can answer. Merely listing features makes little use of video and gives viewers little help comparing the product with their own needs.

For a storage box, the question might be how particular objects fit inside. For a lamp, it could be how the controls work. Avoid trying to explain size, manufacturing, delivery, care and every variation within the same short recording.

Make the conditions visible

Show the actual model being demonstrated and state relevant dimensions or settings. An object used to communicate scale should not create a misleading impression. If additional accessories are required, do not make them look like an automatic part of the standard package.

Avoid cutting away at the precise moment the important action happens. If recording must stop, explain the omitted step. A credible demonstration can show that a task requires preparation or both hands.

Plan backward from the result

First write down what viewers should be able to judge at the end. You may then need an overview, the action itself and a detail of the result. That is a possible starting point, not a mandatory three-shot formula.

Check lighting, background and sound before filming. Reflections may conceal important details, while loud music can obscure the explanation. Ensure that customer information, other screens and people without appropriate permission do not appear in the background.

Keep the explanation aligned with the image

Describe what viewers can currently see. If dimensions appear on screen, keep them readable. Add checked captions and watch the video without sound. Important information should not exist only in a passing spoken remark.

Then test the demonstration with someone unfamiliar with the product. Ask what was shown and what remains unclear. If the person assumes a characteristic you cannot substantiate, change the image or wording.

The accompanying description can add the model name, limitations and a relevant product link. It should not introduce a new claim the demonstration cannot support. A useful demonstration helps people make an appropriate choice, including recognizing when the product is unsuitable for their intended use. That outcome can prevent confusion that would otherwise surface only after purchase.
