Choose business directories deliberately

A business directory is useful when people can find the relevant service there and then contact the right business. Creating the largest possible number of listings is not a sufficient objective on its own.

Inspect a listing as a customer would

Search the directory for your actual service and location. Are the results arranged in an understandable way? Can you identify the telephone number, service area and website? A large directory filled with incomplete profiles may offer little help. Record specific observations before agreeing to a contract.

For example, a bicycle repair shop might be easier to understand in a regional directory with workshop categories than in a general company register. Treat that as a hypothesis, not a promise of new customers. Later, ask enquirers voluntarily how they found the business, or examine referral visits where measurement has been set up appropriately.

Separate the basic listing from the sales pitch

Read which details are free and which services cost money. Check the contract period, automatic renewal, cancellation route and total charge. A visually prominent profile is not necessarily a frequently visited one. Ask for a concrete description of the additional placement rather than a promise about search rankings.

Find out whether you can update the listing yourself. An outdated telephone number is particularly troublesome if corrections require repeated contact with an unavailable salesperson. The business should retain access to its account and contract records.

Start with a manageable selection

Create a table recording each directory, its audience, your profile address, cost, owner and last review date. Copy contact information from a maintained master record. Do not artificially extend the business name simply to insert extra search terms.

Google has its own guidelines for representing a business. Those rules do not automatically apply to every other directory. Review each provider's conditions separately.

After a period chosen in advance, assess the relevance of visits and enquiries alongside the maintenance effort. A small number of contacts makes conclusions uncertain. A listing may still be worthwhile as a dependable source of contact details. However, do not renew a paid placement merely because otherwise the work already invested would feel wasted. The useful question is what verifiable value the listing can provide from this point onward.

Review a paid package before renewal

Consider a hypothetical package containing highlighted placement and an additional profile page. Inspect the two services separately. Does the highlight actually appear for a relevant search? Does the extra page contain information customers need, or merely duplicate an existing description?

When traffic figures are supplied, ask for definitions. Page views, individual visitors and referrals to your website describe different events. A large number without a period or denominator cannot meaningfully be compared with the cost. There is no need to request personal visitor data; aggregated figures with understandable definitions may be enough.

Test contact routes directly from the profile. Call the number and open the website link in an ordinary visitor view. A listing that looks correct can still lead to an old destination.

Before renewing, record the decision and its reason. If the free basic listing remains, check which details disappear when the package ends. Remove internal references to paid features no longer used so the next review begins with the actual arrangement.

Take the next question further.
