Use structured data for content visitors can see

Review visible facts, suitable types and technical markup separately before publishing structured data.

Code displayed on a laptop screen

Structured data describes content in a machine-readable form. It is not an additional space for unsupported business qualities or hidden ratings. The foundation remains the visible page and the information it actually provides.

Do not begin by choosing as many types as possible. First identify what the page represents: an article, organization, specific product or another clearly defined subject. Different pages need different treatment, and not every schema produces a special search appearance.

Begin with visible facts

Compare every planned field with the page. Are the title, description, dates and relevant identity details presented in an understandable context? If a rating or price exists only in the markup and cannot be found by visitors, the representations disagree.

Google's structured-data policies require marked-up information to represent visible content and do not guarantee a special result from correct markup alone. Avoid promises that adding a script automatically produces stars or other enhanced elements.

Do not invent authors, awards or business details to fill fields. If information is unknown, establish whether it is needed and how it can be represented accurately. A populated property is not automatically a true statement.

Select the type for the actual case

A general schema type and a search engine's supported result feature are different things. Consult current documentation for the intended use. Syntactically valid data may still be unsuitable or incomplete for a particular feature.

An editorial page's markup should describe its article. A contact form does not automatically turn the whole page into a product offer. Choose according to the main content and facts available, not the search-result appearance you hope to obtain.

Where several subjects legitimately occur on a page, their relationships need to remain clear. Do not accept a plugin's output without inspection simply because it creates markup for many visible sections. Review what it actually emits and whether the statements conflict.

Separate technical checks from factual review

First check the format. In JSON-LD, incorrect quotation marks, incomplete objects or invalid values can prevent processing. Use an appropriate validator and read the reported issues rather than relying only on a coloured indicator.

Then inspect the meaning. A validator cannot identify every false claim. A formally valid invented name remains inaccurate. Compare titles, URLs, images and dates against the published page.

For generated sites, examine typical and unusual cases. Long titles, missing optional information and multiple languages can expose faults absent from the homepage. Add automated checks when many articles use the same generation process.

Keep addresses and languages aligned

Use the intended production URLs. Local test addresses and previous preview domains should not accidentally remain in delivered markup. Inspect image addresses too: the image must be available at the public path stated.

Each language version should identify its actual language and corresponding title. An English page with a German description in its structured data creates an avoidable contradiction. Translations should contain equivalent facts while matching their own pages.

When content moves or is merged, update the markup as part of that change. The canonical address, visible title and machine-readable information should not describe different versions. A working redirect may hide a mismatch from visitors without removing it from the source.

Include maintenance in publishing

Identify which values come from editorial source data and which are maintained separately. Duplicate manual maintenance increases the risk that visible text changes while markup remains outdated. Where possible, both should be generated from the same checked information.

After an update, inspect the page actually delivered rather than only its template. A build, cache or plugin may output a different state from the one expected. Record whether checks occurred locally, after extracting a package or on the production domain.

Structured data is useful when it accurately and maintainably describes existing content. Its immediate quality can be assessed through that agreement and technically valid output. Whether a search engine subsequently selects an enhanced presentation remains a separate decision by the search system. Keep those outcomes distinct in reports so a successful validation is not described as a verified change in live search appearance.
